Yoga is deeply intertwined with nature – poses are named after various elements of nature, there is pranayama (breath work) for all seasons, and we can ramp up or dial down the energy of our practice depending on what the season is calling forth in us.
Nature is always teaching us – and when we are on our yoga mat, we have the chance to listen. Each time you step on to your mat, you step into a space where your body, breath, and the seasons meet via the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements don’t just live outside in the hills, at the beach, and in the skies, but inside you. And when you practise with them in mind, your practice deepens and your connection with self enhances.
Let’s wander through each of the elements together now …
Earth Energy: Stability & Rooting
Earth is your foundation. It is the solid, grounded energy that supports everything you do.
On the mat, earth shows up in your feet pressing down in Mountain Pose, your palms planted in Downward Dog, or your hips weighing you down in Child’s Pose. Off the mat, it’s the slow walk, the mindful meal, the deep exhale. In the cooler months, earth is where we find steadiness and warmth. In spring, it’s the fertile ground from which our energy begins to rise.
Water Energy: Flow & Softness
Water reminds us to move with grace and adaptability. In your yoga practice, it’s your spine undulating in Cat-Cow, the gentle cascade of a Forward Fold, and there is liquid in the breath that carries you from pose to pose. In the seasons, water is the spring showers, the summer swims and the winter frosts.
When you embody water, you give yourself permission to soften, to be moved, to let go of rigid edges.
Fire Energy: Energy & Transformation
Fire is heat, action, and the spark of change. On the mat, it’s your core engaging in Plank, the strength in Warrior II, the heat of repeated Sun Salutations. Fire asks you to challenge yourself and to build energy and burn away what no longer serves. In summer, fire is abundant in the long days, the sun’s warmth, the vibrant growth all around. It’s a reminder that you are capable, powerful, and bright.
Air Energy: Breath & Expansion
Air is movement, freedom, and spaciousness. It’s your inhale lifting you taller in Tree Pose, the breeze of your breath opening the chest in a gentle backbend, the feeling of lightness as you rise from the ground. In the seasons, air is the warm wind of summer evenings, the fresh spring mornings that carry possibility. Practising with air is an invitation to expand beyond old boundaries and to breathe more deeply into life.
Space Energy: Presence & Possibility
Space holds it all! It’s the container for every other element, the quiet awareness in your practice, the pause between breaths. On the mat, it’s the stillness of Savasana, the silence after an aum chant, the openness you feel in meditation. Through the seasons, space is the sky that shifts above it all, ever-present and ever-changing. When we connect to space, we connect to our purest, most spacious self.
Your mat is a microcosm of the natural world.
When you practise in tune with the elements, you create a living connection between your body, your breath, and the seasons around you!
