It’s official! Soul Studio is now a certified BCorp corporation!

As a company that cares deeply about people and our planet, it made total sense to Sarah and the team to make this pledge to act as a force for good by moving beyond the transactional measures of success, instead focusing more on balancing profit and purpose to move us towards a world that is more equitable, more inclusive, and more sustainable.

It’s been a huge journey to this point, and we offer our deepest gratitude for the support of Grow Good and to all of those pioneers in NZ business who have gone before us; paving the way for us to become NZ’s first yoga studio to join this global community of change makers. To name just a few, we acknowledge fellow Christchurch businesses such as Ethique , Untouched World, and Bennetto Natural Foods co . We wouldn’t be here without the guidance and wisdom of leaders in this space.

So what does it mean?

As a B Corp in the wellness industry, we’re counted among businesses that are leading a global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy.

To gain certification, the businesses impact on all our stakeholders was evaluated against the BCorp framework – including our team of employees, the wider community, suppliers, customers, and the environment. The process took many months and much time and consultation, and the certification validates our commitment to the belief that business can be a force for good!

We are deeply committed to continuous improvement in all of our practices, and aim to create positive change by empowering and investing in our local community, protecting biodiversity, minimising our waste, and reducing our carbon footprint.

How did we become certified?

Gaining BCorp certification requires a robust assessment of the business and all of its activities, identifying where you are making a positive social and/or environmental impact and where you can see opportunities to do better.

Here at Soul, we’ve been inspired by other BCorp businesses leading the way in balancing profit and purpose, and we now have a number of initiatives in place that have supported us to gain our certification – the first yoga studio in NZ to do so!

Helping us to make a positive impact socially and environmentally, some of our current initiatives include:

Removing barriers to yoga for members of the community who may not find mainstream classes accessible for health, cultural, or economic reasons

The establishment of a charitable trust to enable us to reach more people with the positive impacts of yoga

Donations to local charities doing a range of impactful work in the Christchurch community and further afield

Providing wellness services to the NZ business community

Regular community health talks and gatherings to facilitate education and connection

Reducing our carbon footprint through the use of electric vehicles and other energy saving technologies

Hosting regular community tree planting events within our local neighbourhood

We see this certification not as an accolade, but as an opportunity and a commitment for us to continue to improve in meeting high standards of social and environmental impact, and we are excited to continue to bring our people on the journey with us.

This is just the beginning, and we have big dreams for how we can continue to lead positive change both on and off the mat – thanks for being part of it!
